Tips for staying visible out there on the road this season

Once upon a time, Dan Aykroyd said, “You do not need a therapist if you own a motorcycle, any kind of motorcycle!”
This saying is true for most of us. However, part of our mission to keep you safe out on the roads includes keeping you visible. This month, we’ve curated a shortlist of tips that will keep you safe out there.

Brighter is Better
One of the most obvious things that you may want to consider to be more noticeable to passing motorists is selecting a brightly coloured motorcycle. During the day, the human eye most easily picks up green, as well as yellow and blue – incidentally, the reason traffic lights incorporate green. Orange, also high-viz, spells caution, or ‘watch out, here I come’. As we all know, red is always a great option. A dark colour is more difficult to see at night, and you may do well to stick with something like yellow or white. At night, yellow and white become the most noticeable colours at a distance. If you have your heart set on a black motorcycle, why not add a flash of colour to the fairings or simply make sure that your clothing is impossible to miss!

High-Viz Gear and GarbRed motorcycle jacket
When it comes to what you wear while riding, black is definitely not the best choice motorcycle gear. Although classic black leather has been synonymous with bikers for centuries; you may well be invisible to motorists. Wearing all black can also cause issues while riding at night or during bad weather. Luckily, leather jackets do come in brighter colours such as cobalt blue, and textile motorcycle jackets offer more variety with colour options, including red or high-viz yellow and often boast bold reflective strips on the back or arms.

Another vital element of your riding gear is your helmet. Not only does your helmet play a critical role in protecting your grey matter, but it tends to be one of the first details that a passing driver notices. One suggestion would be to invest in a neon coloured helmet which is highly noticeable in any weather and at night. Not a fan of neon, why not consider white or even black with a splash of neon green, bright yellow or red. After all who can miss a vivid Valentino Rossi helmet design!

Avoid Blind Spots
While high-viz motorcycle gear is an ideal riding wardrobe, you should always make sure that other motorists can see you, especially in traffic. Don’t ride in a position where other drivers can’t see you without moving their heads and looking for you. Because drivers are often distracted by either their cell phone or dashboard gadgets these days, making eye contact is the best way to be sure that you are indeed seen!

Use Reflective Tape
We can’t all rush out and buy a new bike or helmet, but reflective tape is a great solution you can apply right away. Putting pieces on the front of your forks and any part of your motorcycle away from a light source, for example, the top of a tall windscreen or the edges of your panniers is a quick and effective solution. Reflective tape is an individual light source at night and will make your bike look much larger, it is also recommended you leave your hi beam light on during the day.

Use Your Horn
Give drivers a reminder of where you are, using your horn is an excellent way to wake up a distracted driver should you be stuck in their blind spot. Don’t worry about being offensive with generous use of your horn – this is about making sure that they notice you so that you can arrive at your destination safely. You could also install a set of aftermarket pipes to be sure that other road users know you’re there but do keep a sense of respect and try not to overdo it with the noise; your dealer will be able to advise you the best brand.

Ride in a Group
This tip is almost a no-brainer because as soon as motorists notice a few bikers in an area, they immediately become more attentive and all those headlights will be impossible to miss. Stay in the group and avoid exceeding speed limits to catch up if you get left behind.

Brake Lights
Many experienced riders know how to prepare for a stop by using down-shifting. The problem here is that the driver behind you won’t notice your brake light until they’re almost on top of you. So, keep in mind that most drivers are used to paying attention when they see brake lights and don’t hesitate to tap the brakes lightly and repeatedly to give the vehicles behind you a friendly warning.

As fellow motorcycle enthusiasts, we understand that you want a combination of gear that not only keeps you safe but is also comfortable stylish. Browse our bold range of visible biker jackets, and remember to always enjoy your biking ‘therapy’ with your safety in mind.

How is Your Motorcycle Jacket Supposed to Fit?

As always, when it comes to motorcycle gear, we talk safety first. However, we also repeatedly say, that when it comes to your jacket; you do not have to sacrifice style for function. This month we chat about the best fit for your motorcycle jacket.

Let’s First Talk the Length of Your Motorcycle Jacket

The reason why many motorcycle jackets are a shorter fit is for both safety and comfort. As far as comfort is concerned; the length (or lack thereof) ensures that you’re comfortable when you’re sitting on your bike so that there’s no excess fabric bunching up around your waist–which can become extremely uncomfortable.

The ideal is to have the bottom of the jacket resting on your thighs while sitting on your bike. Your jacket should sit right at your belt line when you stand. Another aspect in favour of a shorter jacket is to prevent any fabric flailing about as you pick up speed and the wind-lift increases. The added benefit here, is better fuel efficiency. You may also prefer a longer tourer jacket which is usually designed for adventure riding but also does an excellent job on your city commute. Note that by ‘longer’ we don’t mean ‘flapping-in-the-wind’.

Concerning safety; a short jacket won’t catch onto anything protruding from the bike. You certainly won’t want to tango with your bike in the case of a tumble.

Is a Tight-Fitting Motorcycle Jacket What You Want?

In terms of comfort, a snug fit prevents air flowing up as you ride and helps you evade an uncomfortable breeze in cooler weather. However, the main thing you should avoid is a jacket that’s too tight. Chest and waist measurement are the best guidelines to gauge this.

Here are some tips for ensuring the correct fit:

  • Snug is good, but too tight will impede the ventilation system. Form fitting but not tight–is always the way to go.
  • During cold weather you’d most likely want to wear something warm underneath your jacket, so be sure to leave room for that.
  • You will always regret constriction over your shoulders. Not only could tightness over the shoulders affect your manoeuvrability and ability to take quick action when required but you just won’t enjoy your ride when you feel constricted. Remember you’re going to wear this jacket regularly. It may be wise to try on a jacket over a hoodie or heated vest. If you’re able to hug yourself, you’re good to go.
  • A well-fitting jacket won’t pull up over your head if you do end up sliding across the tarmac.
  • Sitting on your bike, the sleeves should end at your wrists when your arms are in the riding position, or mid-palm with arms at your sides when standing.
  • Another good idea is to select a jacket where the front zipper ends at the base of your throat orhas a button on the collar to make sure it remains tight.
  • If the collar is too loose, the chances of a bug getting in there are pretty real!
  • CE Armour is another essential feature that ensures your shoulders, elbows and back enjoy sufficient protection.
  • Velcro adjustable waist, snap adjustable sleeves, cuffs and collar are also normally standard to provide further personalization and ensure best fit.

Are textile or mesh motorcycle jackets safe?

Leather jackets and motorbikes have been synonymous for what seems like forever. What’s better than the sexy look and feel of a thick, safe and beautiful genuine leather jacket? Remember those ‘bomber jackets’ that became such a phenomenon many moons ago – regardless of whether it was the ideal riding gear or not?

Over the years the motorcycle jacket has evolved dramatically and today riders are spoilt for choice when it comes to new styles, safety features and materials. The question from some quarters, though, is whether a textile or mesh jacket can ever be as safe as leather. There seem to be two opposing schools of thought; one for leather the other for textile. So, let’s take a short trip through the features of textile or mesh, and you can decide.

What’s the difference between textile and mesh?

Textile is a broad term used to describe man-made materials such as nylon, ballistic and mesh. The most commonly used material for motorcycle gear is Cordura Nylon, which is known for its durability and resistance to abrasions, tears and scuffs. Essentially mesh is textile material with holes, and this brings us to our vital question. How safe are these fabricated materials?

Let’s talk safety

Textile will definitely provide safety although, unlike leather, may be limited inenduring a second tumble; which means that textile offers the advantage in terms of affordability and versatility but our main concern here, is whether it provides sufficient protection.

Textiles have come an exceedingly long way since the high school rain jacket, and these modern fabrics are strong and durable. Cordura is said to be twice as strong as nylon and three times stronger than polyester. Current textile jackets are robust enough to survive a considerable fall while still protecting the rider, especially when they are kitted out with CE approved armor for the back, shoulders and elbows as well. It can indeed have a higher abrasion resistance than leather.

At street speeds, a textile jacket is likely to do as good a job as leather, with their abrasion resistance strength definitely protecting your skin from dreaded “road rash” in a slide! You’d probably prefer a solid leather jacket though for racing speeds. Modern fabrics like Cordura are astoundingly strong, and provide incredible strength and protection for their weight.

Benefits of textile

Due to its strength, textiles can be made lighter, and this certainly benefits riders when it comes to comfort. Most textile jackets come in a variety of hi-vis colours and are also water resistant, they feature removable liners for added warmth and venting zips to allow ample airflow. You will also appreciate the number of pockets in most textile jackets. In textile, you can enjoy a comfortable ride in almost all weather conditions. While leather can be heavy with very limited breath ability, textile jackets deliver ample ventilation and durability. It has even been said by some bikers that their textile gear outlives their bikes.

At Moto di Moda we offer a select range of top quality, lightweight 600D Cordura motorcycle jackets in various sizes and hi-vis colours for men and women.

We always put our bikers first and continuously strive to uphold the biker lifestyle and help you look good, feel good, but above all – remain safe out there.

Motorcycle Jacket or Fashion Jacket? You Decide

As a keen motorcyclist you have probably heard the saying; ‘don’t dress for the ride, dress for the slide.’ Other statements you may have seen or heard include: ‘fashion biker jackets are named for their design, not because you can use them for riding.’ ‘Biker jackets are first for safety, second a fashion statement.’

Why Compromise?

At Moto di Moda, we strive always to challenge conventional beliefs and say, why not combine function and fashion to style your ride? We fully understand and value the fact that a motorcycle jacket is for your protection. Not only do we bring you European inspired leather and textile jackets with all necessary safety features such as elbow, back and shoulder CE armour to protect your biker bod as standard, but we also understand the spirit of freedom that encapsulates the biker culture. This culture speaks of daring, flair, and individuality but above all style, and doesn’t conform to life in the slow lane.

Leather

To this end, we are proud of our range of safe and beautiful jackets. Our leather jackets are 1.2mm super soft aniline cowhide dyed exclusively with soluble dyes, featuring perfect stitching and uniquely styled elements such as our zip placement. Our fashionable designs and colours will catch anyone’s eye and provide you with that ‘look good, feel good’ vibe that’s almost as thrilling as the sense of freedom you get on your bike whether zipping through traffic or out on the open road.

Textile

Our textile jackets are lightweight and boast all the safety features and creature comforts that refuse to compromise on style and fashion. Not only will our comfortable 600D Cordura® abrasion and water resistant outers keep you safe for that possible slide, but you’ll look cool too! We also like to say, ‘not everything has to be black.’ Apart from a comfortable cut and safety features, you’ll also appreciate the variety of colours and prints, that enhance visibility. Go from fabulous speedster to classy café patron in any of our snappy-looking jackets.

Safety First

The bottom line is, simply wearing your favorite fashion jacket won’t cut it, protection is and always will be a necessity. When jacket shopping, it’s advisable to pay attention to abrasion resistance – the thickness of the leather or textile should be sufficient to protect you in a slide. A basic rule of thumb: The thicker the fabric, the better the slide time, and the safer your hide. Interior seams are also not advisable if you want optimal abrasion protection.

You also want to opt for something with high visibility and weather resistance for obvious reasons. A zip-out insulation liner will enable you to cope with the elements and built-in armor for your back, shoulders and elbows is never optional.

Finally, you should understand that quality is a worthwhile investment. If you go cheap, it may cost you dearly in the end. Our jackets bring with them all the style and safety features at a price that won’t destroy your bank balance but be assured we also never compromise on quality in doing this!

We are continuously looking to develop new and exciting ways to help you look terrific and remain safe while enjoying your lifestyle of freedom on two wheels. The full range of jackets come with free shipping and a 30-day return policy Australia Wide.
